Project area: South West Greenland - Ketilidian Orogen

Target: supracrustal rocks of the southern domain and granite-gneiss complex (Julianhåb Batholith)

Main implication for potential resources: Nalunaq Goldmine (Arctic Resources license), Amitsoq Graphite Mine (Alba Mineral Resources license), Vagar gold project (NunaMinerals license).

Present base of knowledge: geological maps produced during the mid 60’s. On the eastern part of the fieldwork area targeted expeditions were carried out in the mid to late 90’s. No new additional observations to most of the mapped area since the 60’s.

Deliverables: articles reporting an improved understanding of the tectono-metamorphic evolution of the South West Greenland - Ketilidian orogen. This includes new age dating data of selected units and production of mineral potential maps.

Description: The aim of the fieldwork in 2017 is to cover the more remote and less accessible areas of the contact zone between the Julianehåb Igneous Complex (Central Domain) and the Supracrustal rock suite (Southern Domain), with emphasis on the supracrustal rock suite and the areas of known mineralization. Tentatively, the plan is to cover as much area as possible through different campsites set up in the more remote areas using helicopter assistance and by boat for more accessible locations. The fieldwork is scheduled for ca. 20 days.

The fieldwork is part of a 3 year PhD project. The PhD project aims to establish a more detailed understanding of the tectono-metamorphic history of South Greenland and the geological relation to the Nalunaq Goldmine, and in turn to current knowledge of gold deposits worldwide. A major goal is to obtain a better structural and lithological perception on the geology and ore-forming processes of the Ketilidian Orogen.

During the June-July 2016 fieldwork a former GGU boat (J.F. Johnstrup) was used to access key geological locations in the domain where the Julianehåb Igneous Complex (i.e. Central Domain) and the Supracrustal rock suite (i.e. Southern Domain) meet. From the boat we targeted accessible key locations, from where new structural and petrographic information were collected, along with a total of 99 rock samples.
