QGreenland is a new project to create an interdisciplinary Geospatial Information System (GIS) data environment that is freely available and ready-to-use on the open-source QGIS platform. QGreenland is funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation EarthCube program and primary development and dissemination of the QGreenland tool will happen during 2020-2023. Using QGIS, a free, open-source, cross-platform GIS environment as the foundational software, QGreenland will offer a freely-redistributable package of original-quality data in a complete GIS environment. Three tiers of a data will be available, including web-served datasets. An international Editorial Board and diverse Project Collaborators will help the QGreenland Team identify key geospatial datasets and act as two-way connectors between QGreenland and user communities in the US, Greenland, and across the globe. The QGreenland platform and a strong data management plan will improve Greenland-focused research, data discovery, learning, decision making, and collaboration by reducing startup time and increasing data access for all user groups, providing a base GIS environment for individual projects, and serving expert-selected interdisciplinary data to support discovery.
Serving researchers, educators, decision makers and planners, and communities, the broader impacts of QGreenland are also far reaching. With QGreenland and QGIS as free, open-source tools, QGreenland is accessible to all, and can help people in developing countries, under-resourced communities, and schools to learn about and conduct work on and in Greenland. QGreenland is an ideal package for teaching about Greenland and for use as a topical theme for teaching GIS skills more broadly. Through Project Collaborators and outreach in Greenland, QGreenland can also become a tool for local communities and regional stakeholders. While research in the north can often be extractive, by co-creating a flexible architecture on an open platform with open data, QGreenland has the potential to deliver “southern” data back north, rather than the other way around. QGreenland is an ideal foundational model for envisioned long-term development of a full Q-Arctic environment.
