Science / project plan

Increased freshwater input from melting ice, termed freshening, is a major but largely overlooked driver of changes in Arctic marine ecosystems. We aim to quantify and understand how increased ocean temperature and freshening impacts physical and biogeochemical processes producing cascading effects on biota. We focus on how this freshening affects the coastal ocean connected to the Greenland ice sheet and beyond. In 2021-2022, a large multidisciplinary synoptic survey “Polar Dream” will take place in the waters between Svalbard and Greenland. Other international research vessels will operate in the eastern and central sectors of the survey area and our project cover the Greenlandic side and complete the sections covering coastal waters from Nuuk to East Greenland and from glacier to offshore.
