Maniitsoq 1:100000 Map Project
The Maniitsoq region is known to be prospective for nickel-copper-cobalt, diamonds, gold, and rare earth elements. Our mapping since 2016 has resulted in significant new advances in our understanding of the geology of this area and, more generally, the geological evolution of west Greenland. We have identified an important Neoarchean history (2850–2630 Ma) that was not previously known, and which is significant for understanding mineralisation. Specifically, the 3.22–2.96 billion year old Akia terrane was exhumed and eroded at ca. 2850 Ma, and then re-buried to the deep crust during continental collision at ca 2780–2700 Ma, when it was squashed between the 2.9 Ga Tasiusarsuaq terrane to the south and the 2.74 Ga Tuno terrane to the north. Neoarchean shear zones related to this collision deformed the much older nickel-bearing norites, and are associated with elevated gold in the Kangerluarsuk supracrustal belt, which might be correlative with the gold-bearing Storø supracrustal belt in the Nuuk region.
The final field work for the Maniitsoq map project will be carried out in the 2018 summer and the digital and hard copy geological map and explanatory notes will be publically released in 2019.
