Project details
As part of the MEOPAR funded project "COARnet" (PI: Dr. Helmuth Thomas, University of Dalhousie), we are collecting new data on carbon system components in coastal waters of Hudson Bay. This shelf sea lies at the southern margin of the Canadian Arctic and receives Arctic Ocean outflow. It is vulnerable to ocean acidification in part because it receives large inputs of river water. Our emphasis for new data collection is wintertime, when past observations are scarce. We have been collecting data near communities in southeast Hudson Bay and James Bay and (beginning 2018) northwest Hudson Bay, where Inuit rely on marine resources that may be vulnerable to impacts from ongoing and future ocean acidification. The sampling is being accomplished with the support of a community-based research network coordinated by the Arctic Eider Society.
