Science / project plan

The project has 3 aims: (1) To estimate the density and amount of lost gillnets in the inshore Greenlandic fjords. (2) To investigate how big the financial coast of lost gillnets on the seabed is for society and the fishing industry in Greenland. (3) To remove lost gillnets from the seabed while investigations are taking place, and to get an insight into the efficiency of the recovery equipment.

In order to determine areas of interest we use logbook data to determine areas with large fishing activity. The investigations and recovery of lost equipment will be done by drawing a sled fitted with a GoPro, lights and hooks randomly in an area of high fishing activity during existing surveys with the research vessel Sanna.

Based on the video data we will make an estimate of the efficiency of the recovery equipment, by comparing the amount of lost fishing equipment in the videos with what was collected by the recovery equipment.
